Oxford Lanes Upgrades to USBC-Approved String Pin Bowling in Ohio College Town

Oxford Lanes has been part of the bowling community in Oxford, Ohio for decades. Now, the 12-lane center has updated what happens behind the pins.

Funk converted all 12 lanes to USBC-approved string pinsetters, giving Oxford Lanes a modern string pin bowling setup designed for the mix of league bowlers, college students, younger players, and casual guests who use the center throughout the week.

For a bowling center with an established league program in a college town, the conversion needed to support serious bowling while making day-to-day operation of the lanes easier to manage.

A Bowling Center With Deep Roots in Oxford

Oxford Lanes has served the community at its current location since the early 1960s. Located just a few minutes from Miami University’s campus, the center welcomes league bowlers, college students, families, and open-play guests.

Leagues remain a significant part of that schedule. Oxford Lanes hosts both adult and youth leagues, while its open-bowling schedule works around leagues, team practices, and other events.

That made the 12-lane conversion more than an equipment swap. The new pinsetters needed to work for a center where bowling ranges from a college student stopping in with friends to a league bowler returning week after week.

Bringing String Pin Bowling to All 12 Lanes

Funk converted each of Oxford Lanes’ 12 lanes to string pin bowling.

A string pinsetter resets the same ten pins after each shot using strings attached to the tops of the pins. Funk’s system uses a mechanical pin-drop bar and rotary design, with fewer moving components than a traditional free-fall machine. Funk has continued developing the technology over the years, a history recently featured as part of its string pin bowling showcase at Bowl Expo 2026.

For an established bowling center, those operational differences matter. Keeping 12 lanes available for leagues, open bowling, practices, and events means the equipment behind the lanes has to be dependable and manageable for the people running the center.

The conversion updates that part of the operation while allowing Oxford Lanes to continue using its existing full-length bowling lanes.

USBC Approval Keeps League Play in the Picture

For Oxford Lanes, one detail carries particular weight: the Funk string pinsetters are USBC approved.

The United States Bowling Congress spent years studying string pinsetter technology, including extensive testing of pinfall and scoring characteristics. Its research examined factors such as string length and pinsetter configuration before specifications were established for certified string pin bowling equipment.

That certification is especially relevant at a center with an active league community. Oxford Lanes can modernize its pinsetting equipment while continuing to support sanctioned competition on approved equipment.

It also shows why USBC-approved string pin bowling can be a practical option beyond entertainment-focused venues. Traditional centers with league schedules can consider the technology while continuing to support sanctioned play.

A Different Kind of Upgrade for a College-Town Center

Oxford Lanes serves a broad range of bowlers. Its proximity to Miami University puts college students within a few minutes of the center, while youth and adult leagues bring another group of regular bowlers through the doors.

Those audiences don’t necessarily use the lanes in the same way. A league bowler may be focused on competition and consistency. A group of students may be looking for somewhere to spend an evening together. Younger bowlers may be building their skills through a youth league or lesson, all within the same 12-lane center.

With USBC-approved string pinsetters now installed across the center, Oxford Lanes has updated the equipment behind the game while keeping the familiar full-length bowling experience at the center of the business.

Modernizing an Existing Bowling Center

Existing bowling centers can modernize their pinsetting equipment while continuing to use the lanes and space already in place. Oxford Lanes is one example of how a string pin bowling conversion can bring newer equipment into an established center.

For Oxford Lanes, that meant converting 12 lanes in a center that has served its community for more than six decades. The equipment behind the pins has changed, but the lanes can continue serving the league bowlers, students, families, and younger players who keep them busy.
