Bowling Alley Builders Face the Unexpected During a 12-Lane Conversion on Réunion Island

When people search for experienced bowling alley builders, they’re often thinking about design expertise, installation timelines, and technical precision. But sometimes, the real test of a builder’s capability comes when everything goes off plan.

That was exactly the case at Bowling City Réunion, located in Saint-Denis on Réunion Island: a French department in the Indian Ocean known for its volcanic landscapes, rainforests, and extreme weather conditions. What began as a straightforward string pinsetter conversion quickly turned into a full-scale reconstruction that tested logistics, resilience, and teamwork at every level.

A Global Journey to One of the World’s Most Remote Bowling Projects

Before a single lane could be touched, the project already stood out. Funk Bowling’s German installation team traveled more than 17 hours to reach Réunion Island, deep in the Indian Ocean. Two 40-foot shipping containers filled with bowling equipment were sent ahead, carefully coordinated to arrive on schedule despite the island’s remote location.

The original scope of work called for a 12-lane string pinsetter conversion for classic tenpin bowling, including new pinsetters, ball returns, and lane components. Everything was planned, engineered, and shipped with precision. This was exactly the kind of complex international project seasoned bowling alley builders are expected to handle.

Then the unexpected happened.

When Bowling Alley Construction Becomes Full Reconstruction

Once on site, Funk’s team uncovered extensive termite damage beneath the existing lanes. The entire wooden underlayment, originally intended to remain, was compromised. The plan changed instantly.

Instead of proceeding with a conversion, the team had to remove everything and rebuild the lane foundation from the ground up. Funk quickly mobilized additional crew members and partnered with a local carpenter, coordinating a massive wood replacement effort across all 12 lanes.

As if that wasn’t enough, the island was then hit by a typhoon, introducing water damage and further delays into the picture. What was originally scheduled as a standard installation expanded into a month-and-a-half rebuild, demanding flexibility, persistence, and on-the-ground problem solving.

This is where the difference between installers and true bowling alley builders becomes clear.

A Community Effort to Bring Bowling Back to Life

Despite the challenges, the project never lost momentum. Local tradespeople, friends of the Bowling City owners, and members of the community stepped in to help the Funk team rebuild the lanes and restore the center.

Together, they replaced damaged materials, reinforced the structure, and rebuilt all 12 lanes to ensure they were safe, stable, and ready for play once again. The result wasn’t just a successful installation, it was a shared victory that brought the bowling center back stronger than before.
